From idea to App Store

The product

Politik puts everything you need to actually understand American politics in one app: who represents you, how they vote, where their money comes from, what's moving through Congress right now, and an AI that explains any of it in plain English. No cable news, no jargon, no ten open tabs. It hit 4,000 users on launch day. Built with three college founders who had never shipped software.

The challenge

Understanding politics today means piecing it together yourself. A vote on Congress.gov, the money on a campaign-finance site, the context from cable news, the spin from social media, and the bill itself in language nobody outside a law office can read. Nothing connects, every source has an angle, and most people give up — 68% of Americans can't name their own representative. Politik's three founders, international relations majors fresh off a summer on Capitol Hill, wanted one place that explains all of it to a 20-year-old in thirty seconds. They had the domain knowledge and the distribution plan. They had never written a line of code, and they wanted to launch in under three months.

How we tackled it

01

Ran a two-week product sprint with the founders to map every source people currently juggle to understand politics, then designed one home feed that answers the three questions that matter: who represents me, how did they vote, what's happening in Congress right now

02

Designed a light, editorial interface with a red-to-blue gradient brand system that reads as nonpartisan — no party color dominates any screen

03

Built a data layer on Congress.gov, the Google Civic Information API, and OpenStates that resolves any zip code or GPS location to a district, its senators, and its House member

04

Shipped a real-time legislation tracker with progress timelines from introduction through committee to floor votes, plus chamber-balance and votes-held visualizations

05

Built Politik AI, a chat assistant grounded in official data that explains any bill, vote, or process in plain English — "What is the filibuster?" answered in one screen instead of one afternoon

06

Added an interactive US map for state-by-state exploration, Executive branch profiles in order of succession, Supreme Court justices with ideology indicators, and daily "How would you vote?" polls

What we built

Politik shipped to the App Store in under three months as a React Native app with a Node.js backend and a scheduled ingestion pipeline that pulls Congress.gov, campaign-finance, and state data into a single feed, so the whole picture lives in one place and stays current. Launch day brought 4,000 users; within a week the app hit #2 on the App Store, stayed on the charts for three weeks, and earned coverage in Axios, a Fox 5 segment, and a SiriusXM interview. Politik now runs campus launch events, starting with 100+ students at the University of Denver, and is building toward Politik 2.0.
