Coffee Shop Testing
Go to a coffee shop with your laptop or phone. Approach people who look like your target user. Offer to buy their next drink in exchange for 10 minutes of feedback. Show them your prototype or live product. Ask them to complete one specific task while you observe without helping. Take notes on where they hesitate, what they misunderstand, and what questions they ask aloud.

Interviews are the highest-signal research method available to startups. No survey or analytics tool tells you the why behind user behavior. Interviews do, if you ask the right questions.
The Mom Test Framework
Rob Fitzpatrick's "The Mom Test" offers a straightforward rule: ask about the past, not the future. "Would you use this feature?" is a useless question. People say yes to avoid conflict. "Walk me through the last time you tried to do X" produces an honest, specific answer grounded in real experience.
The three rules from the book: talk about their life, not your idea. Ask about specific past events, not generalized opinions. Talk less and listen more. A good interview is 80% the participant talking and 20% you asking follow-up questions.
Jobs-to-Be-Done Framework
Clayton Christensen's Jobs-to-Be-Done theory reframes product thinking around the job a user is trying to accomplish, not the features they request. The core interview question is: "When you [used our product / encountered this problem], what were you trying to get done?"
The goal is to understand the functional job (what task they want completed), the emotional job (how they want to feel), and the social job (how they want to be perceived). A project manager "hiring" your tool does not just want tasks organized. They want to feel in control, and they want their team to perceive them as organized and competent. Products that address all three dimensions create stronger attachment.

Keep interviews to 45 to 60 minutes. Use this structure:
- First 5 minutes: Build rapport. Ask about their role, what they are working on, what a typical day looks like. Do not start with product questions immediately.

Use scales consistently. If you use 1-to-5 for one question, do not switch to 1-to-7 for the next. Net Promoter Score (0 to 10, "How likely are you to recommend us?") is worth including as a benchmark you can track over time. Anything above 50 is excellent for an early-stage product.

Analyzing and Synthesizing Research Findings
Raw research data is not insight. Ten interview transcripts and five usability recordings are only useful if you extract the patterns. Synthesis is the skill most startup teams underprioritize, and it is where the real value of research is created.

Each finding should map to a specific product decision. If 7 out of 10 users cannot find the export function, the action is: move the export button to a more visible location and test again. If users consistently misunderstand your pricing page, the action is: rewrite the pricing page copy and run a 5-user test on the new version.
Research without action is expensive note-taking. Build the habit of writing "so what?" next to every finding. The answer to "so what?" is the action item for your next sprint.

One-off research studies are useful. A continuous research practice is transformative. The teams that build the best products are not the ones that run one big research project at launch. They are the ones that talk to users every single month, sprint after sprint, as a non-negotiable part of how they build.

A sustainable monthly cadence for a small team looks like this: two to four user interviews per month (2 hours of session time, 2 hours of synthesis), one round of 5-user usability testing per quarter on your most critical flow, one in-product survey live at all times to capture continuous feedback, and a weekly review of support tickets and app store reviews to surface emerging patterns.
